Plot Comes First It Shapes Everything

Hi, I’m Jennie Bennett!

I usually start with plot because what might happen to a character would change the essence of who they are. Knowing a character’s story is the first step in creating a character that has true depth.
Always!

Characters who become real in my mind end up becoming characters who have their own ideas. As writers it’s our job to honor that character’s journey. Although it can make writing hard, getting to know your characters will create a believable experience for the readers and drive the story forward.

When Your Cast Surprises You.

I personally like to write characters that have a lot of growing to do. They will change as the story progresses because they’ll have to face challenges that will determine if they become a hero or a villain.

I think it’s important to write a character as if you’re meeting them where the story starts. Just like you get to know other people over time, your characters will naturally reveal more about themselves as you continue writing. Don’t force their backstory at the beginning, but know their backstory so when it comes up in conversation with other characters they can relay the information naturally.
